First off I am not a geek. But I have been using, selling as service (check my website) and promoting GNU/Linux for almost 10 yrs now. It sure has been no bed of roses I assure you. But it has come a long way as illustrated by the screen grabs shown. What a lot of people don't know is what GNU/Linux is all about. It is by people, for the people and of the people. Therefore it is free to the people to do what they want with it. And the results are there for all to see.
Multitude of distributions. Anybody can take it and make it do what they want. No limits on that. But there are limits on taking away that freedom. Welcome to the brave GNU world.

FoxH

I guess some people want frills. Or else why come up with windows flip when alt tab worked fine?

Why change menus and put up silly little icons on special bars, can't people read menus...eye candy.

So if a computer is just for work, we all probably only need 2 or 3 applications. Wordperfect, Lotus 123, DB4, a text browser, netsend for email would probably cover it. Break out the 8088's.

Those effects look fine and dandy, if they work, unfortunately the xorg. drivers are always a step or two behind the hardware, like my Radeon hd 4830, and don't even mention the useless ati drivers.

This article would've been useful if at least you would have instructed the readers on how to get compiz, instead of showing off thumbs that you copy pasted from somewhere. And what the fuck is a "CUI", Mr. Assfame, I think you suck!

Linux provides more security than windows. So user needs to be a little technical in approach. For basic users it offers GUI but real power of linux is felt in CUI. Its good and preferred by a lot of developers

I am not a geek (geek is not a bad thing). I have Fedora 9 and Mandriva on stick flash drives. Before that I used several flavors with VM Player. I want to use Linux and not Microsoft.
I have used compiz on Mandriva.
I have been looking for a place to express this sentiment: How can Linux become mainstream if it does not come completely ready to use like Microsoft? One needs handbooks and glossaries to use Linux. Every flavor has it's own terms for the same thing. Why is everything in KDE "k" this or "k" this? I don't want to use root commands. That became antiquated when DOS was replaced with graphical interface for people like me. Gos seemed the most like what I am looking for.
Linux has all of these people working on improving Linux, yet they would rather spend time working on frills like 3D. Now come on, which mainstream computer users are going to learn what it takes to use Linux? I think someone in the Linux community should provide a no cost os that I would feel comfortable in putting on my old computer.
If anyone sees this, I am sure they will nickpick me to death as is done on all of the comment sections I have ever read. They will say I'm stupid or there is already what I am looking for available. I am really trying folks, so don't belittle me, please.

@WinDoze
You can try transformation packs for some effects. A free 3D flip is available for Win XP (search on my blog) and a expensive 3D cube application is available too.
Linux offers all for free. You want it, you switch.
