What are torrents and how to download by using torrents

Many people keep asking me how can I download movies from internet and when I reply that movies are available and can be downloaded from torrents, their next question is what is a torrent? And I believe that if someone is new to torrent, it would be difficult to understand the basic working of things. So, this post is for all the people who have never used torrents before.

Regular Download Method

The user (client) requests the file to download from a website (server) and the server accepts the connection and downloading starts.

downloading Here the speed of downloading is dependent on how much bandwidth server is providing to the user which is most probably a cap on your high speed broadband. I would recommend reading the download manager myth to learn when you actually get advantage of using them.

Torrent Download Method

We have a completely different method here. We don’t download the file, we download the torrent which contains meta information on how the file can be downloaded.

Torrent is basically just a file with .torrent extension which contains the information required to connect with the tracker and which file to download.

You can always get to see some numbers associated with the files such as in this screenshot of torrentz.com

torrent-peer

This shows the number of peers who are seeders and leechers. Seeders are the peers which have a full copy of the file being downloaded (599) and Leechers are the peers which are currently downloading the file (56). A good ratio of seeders to leechers is considered good.

utorrentTo download the file from a torrent we need a torrent client such as uTorrent. The reason I recommend uTorrent is that it is very lightweight and has enough features.

When you are ready with your Torrent client, open the downloaded torrent file within your client. Just Drag & Drop it onto the client and then the actual download of the desired file can start after you specify the download location of the file.

utorrent-downloading

Here there is no server, a peer (user) can download the file from both Seeders & Leechers, hence utilizing full bandwidth of the user as there is no cap on data transfer, the user can connect to as many users so as to use the full bandwidth.

Downloading and uploading copyrighted content is considered as illegal. So make sure you use it for best and not for the worst. Rest is up to you. 🙂

      See you around!

  3. Great article. I’ve been looking at niche sites recently like thevault.bz which was rubbish! They make you jump through hoops to get an account claiming loads of exclusive content but you can get everything from the main torrent sites like pirate bay. thevault.bz is a total waste of time!
